Great success at the 67th Berlinale for The Party, the new movie from the British director and screenwriter Sally Potter. The project, presented at MIA | Cinema 2015 co-production market (formerly New Cinema Network), is produced by Adventure Pictures Ltd (founded in 1990 by Potter herself and Christopher Sheppard, producer of the film along with Kurban Kassam) and by Great Point Media.
The film, which the author describes as a “tragedy in disguise of a comedy”, is about the party thrown by Janet, a woman who has just been nominated Shadow Minister of Health. During the evening, guests debate about their deepest political and ideological beliefs, with a final tragicomic epilog.
Potter acknowledged the political flavour of the film, admitting that the project was born after the last British election. The film is a reflection on politics and its power of undermining human relations.
Among the high-profile cast: Emily Mortimer, Cillian Murphy, Kristin Scott Thomas, Cherry Jones, Timothy Spall, Bruno Ganz and Patricia Clarkson.
The Party is Potter’s 8th film; her most famous works include Orlando (1992), The Man Who Cried (2000) and Ginger & Rose (2012). Distribution rights in Italy have been acquired by Academy Two.
