The 42nd edition of the Toronto International Film Festival (September 7-17) includes three films from NCN (New Cinema Network): Looking for Oum Kulthum by Shirin Neshat (NCN 2013), which is also competing in Venice in the Giornate degli Autori programme; The Conformist by Cai Shangjun (NCN 2012) and The Journey by Mohamed Jabarah Al-daradji (NCN 2011 – picture above).
Also many Italian movies attends the festival: Rainbow – A Private Affair by brothers Paolo and Vittorio Taviani (Stemal Entertainment, Ipotesi Cinema, Les Films d’Ici, Rai Cinema) will be premiered worldwide in the Masters programme; the Galas Presentations will include The Leisure Seeker by Paolo Virzì (Indiana Production, Rai Cinema, with the contribution of MiBACT, in association with 3 Marys Entertainment), while Hannah by Andrea Pallaoro (Partner Media Investment, Left Field Ventures, Good Fortune Films, Rai Cinema, To be Continued) will compete in the Contemporary World Cinema section. Both are competing in Venice too. This last programme also includes A Ciambra by Jonas Carpignano, which was screened at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes.
After the huge success of Berlin, Call Me By Your Name by Luca Guadagnino (Frenesy, La Cinefacture, Water’s End Productions, RT Features) will compete in the Special Presentations programme of the TIFF. The Wavelengths section will include an Italian coproduced documentary, Beyond the One by Anna Marziano (Spectre Productions, Joon film).
