Hot Docs, the largest documentary festival in North America, announced its winner list. This year’s edition featured a noteworthy Italian presence, which proved their success with two awards.
The first TIE! Special Jury Prize went to Vento Soave by Corrado Punzi. The jury for the international feature films, composed of Gave Lindo (chief of CBC programming team), Justine Nagan (American Documentary Executive Director), B. Ruby Rich (Professor in the University of California), commented on the awards: “With its epic approach and the personal details, this subtle essay on environmental degradation conquers the spectators with its unexpected aesthetic power and its pungent panache”.
The Best Mid-Length Documentary Award went to the medium-length film La Convocazione by Enrico Maisto. In this case the jury was composed of Lisa Jackson (director), Brett Story (geographer), Christoph Terhechte (Director of the Berlinale Forum) who affirmed their choice by saying: “This portrait of the daily functioning of the Italian judicial system, which seems simple at first, ends up by showing formal rigor and subtle introspection that elicit immense questions on the issues of civic duty, justice, democracy and human nature”.
The presence of Italian films at the Hot Docs Festival was organized for a second successive year by Istituto Luce Cinecittà-Filmitalia, together with the contribution of the ICE (Italian Trade Agency) for the promotion and international communication of Italian companies.
