The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Amazon, as audio-visual content producer, took the path to independent distribution too: if at this time the streaming giant used the traditional network (through agreement with Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate), starting from Woody Allen’s next movie, Wonder Wheel, the theatrical release will be managed independently.
Amazon seems to be much more prepared to compromise than its direct competitor Netflix, and many filmmakers appreciate this fact: besides Woody Allen, who is in his third collaboration with Amazon (the series Crisis in Six Scenes and the feature Cafè Society are in the catalogue), even Christopher Nolan, the award-winning director of The Dark Knight trilogy and the successes such as Interstellar and the recent Dunkirk, lately praised Amazon’s model by calling it “perfectly usable” and harshly attacked Netflix.
Wonder Wheel, starring Kate Winslet, Juno Temple, Justin Timberlake and Jim Belushi, should open in theatres on December 1, although the release date hasn’t been confirmed yet.
