The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, the most acclaimed documentary festival in the world, will take off this year from April 26th to the 6th of May in Toronto. For this year’s edition, the festival will also include some Italian projects.
In this festival’s edition, several Italian productions will also be presented. Corrado Punzi’s Winds of Swabia (Fluid Productions, Muud Film) will be shown in the International Spectrum section, which tells us about the life and customs in a city in southern Italy, near a coal-fired power plant, one of the largest petrochemicals in Europe. In The Changing Face of Europe section – managed by the EFP – European Film Promotion – there will be Diego Pascal Panarello’s The Strange Sound Of Happiness (Stefilm, Kick Film GmbH) dedicated to Diego’s dream and redemption trip following some misadventures.
In the World Showcase section of Hot Docs, two Italian documentaries will be presented. First of all, Enrico Maisto’s The Call (Start, Rai Cinema) which portrays the story of 60 citizens who are selected randomly by an IT system will participate without their knowledge in a contest to become popular judges. Still in the World Showcase category, Happy winter by Giovanni Totaro (I Wonder Pictures) with Mondello’s summer in Palermo as its main character, where families are strives to show a wealth that they do not really possess.
With 25 years of history, over 150 films and more than 2000 participants, Hot Docs brings to Toronto the best projects in the market. The selected Italian documentaries, as confirmed by the Festival Program Director, Shane Smith, are a good representation of the degree of artistic talent in the subject. It is indeed an important window for this sector, in which the Italian presence is coordinated by Istituto Luce Cinecittà, with the contribution of the ICE – Agency for the internationalization and promotion of Italian businesses abroad.
