The New Cinema Network (NCN) is proud to present to the film industry the 23 projects evaluated and chosen by selection committee members Anne Lai and Paul Federbush of the Sundance Institute, Matthew Baker (HanWay Films) and Iole Giannattasio (MIBACT – Directorate-General for Cinema).
The NCN once again proves its international scope and its support, through meticulous networking and scouting, of emerging and established filmmakers from around the globe.
France is represented by Mobile Homes by Vladimir de Fontenay, whose shorts have played at festivals worldwide, including Tribeca, Locarno, SXSW, Slamdance and Clermont-Ferrand; and Laure De Clermont-Tonnerre who, after performing for high-caliber directors such as Raoul Ruiz, Luc Besson and Julian Schnabel (and winning the Nantucket Film Festival, as well as good reviews at Tribeca, with her first short), makes her feature directorial debut with Mustang.
Cypriot director, and Berlin Talent Campus and Binger Film Lab alumnus, Stavros Pamballis, brings to Rome The Siege on Liberty Street while Greek director Georgis Grigorakis will present Digger, an intense family drama that captures the current crisis in his country. Bodo Kox, considered one of the most important and original names of independent Polish cinema, will bring The Man with the Magic Box.
Emerging Romanian filmmaker Ioana Mischie, a participant of the prestigious Berlinale-Script Station and Locarno Academy Meetings, presents 237 Years, while Serbian director Mina Djukic will be ready to talk about We Didn’t Talk About the End, her sophomore feature after the acclaimed The Disobedient, which debuted at Sundance.
Spain is represented by Italo Disco by Richard Garcia, whose internationally acclaimed shorts include Taboulé (2012 Goyas finalist) and Ana’s Way (Tribeca, Guadalajara, Malaga film festivals).
The collaboration with the London Production Finance Market brings Agnieszka Lukasiak’s Deliver Us from Evil; while Flo Linus Baumann’s Swiss-US 50 Miles from Boomtown and Riot Waif by South Africa’s Zinaid Meeran come to Rome by way of consolidated collaborations with, respectively, Sundance Labs and the Durban Film Market.
Turkey will be present with two projects: The Death of Black Horses by Ferit Karahan, winner of numerous festival prizes; and Hilal, Feza and other Planets by Kutlug Ataman (whose Berlinale title Lola and Billy the Kid won prestigious awards at international festivals), selected through the longstanding partnership with Cinéfondation-L’Atelier di Cannes.
Acclaimed director Sally Potter (Orlando, Tango Lessons) is presenting her latest project, The Party (UK), alongside A Hymn from Mars, a heartfelt love story spanning the UK and US, by fellow Brit Ruth Paxton.
American filmmaker Sylvia Saether, who participated in the prestigious 2015 Film Independent Director’s Lab and is an alum of the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop For Women, is bringing King of Norway.
Another interesting project, from a faraway land, is Bahraini filmmaker Saleh Nass’ Grace Period, a highly topical drama about immigration told through the story of a young Syrian who heads for the glitter and shine of Dubai in search of salvation and happiness.
Mexico’s Arcadi Palerm brings to NCN Oliver and the Pool, a delicate coming-of-age story that balances the fantastical with a deft comedic touch.
Five projects selected from copious submissions mark Italy’s substantial and varied presence at the NCN.
Goddess of Calm Seas is the new project by Elisa Amoruso, scriptwriter for some of Italy’s most interesting emerging directors (including Claudio Noce, Lamberto Sanfelice and Marco Ponti) and won numerous prizes for her documentary Off Road.
Francesco Falaschi’s comical and tender tale of redemption and rebirth, Perfect Taste, takes place in the fascinating world of professional cooking.
Giovanni La Parola’s My Body will Bury You is an atypical, all-female western set in the 19th century during the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
Costanza Quatriglio, whose much-lauded documentaries have won numerous festival awards (including at Locarno, Venice, Turin and Rome), has been selected for her project Just like my Son.
Young talent Fulvio Risuleo, already a two-time winner at Cannes (his short Lievito Madre won the Cinéfondation Award while Varicella picked up the Sony CineAlta prize for Best Short in Critics’ Week), presents Look Up, selected from the Sundance Workshop organized by the NCN in July during the Capalbio Film Festival.
