Documentaries vying for the 38th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards (the TV documentary awards) have been announced. Nominations are divided in 49 categories ranging from the “classic” documentary to news reports and multimedia projects.
All the documentaries were aired during known American TV programmes. PBS is in first place (48), followed by CBS (43), ABC (19), HBO (18), CNN (16) and Univision (11). The main category (Best Documentary) is ruled almost exclusively by PBS, which presents four of the five titles in contention: Children of Syria (aired during the programme Frontline), Welcome to Leith (Independent Lens), Thank You for Playing and The Look of Silence (both aired during POV). The fifth and final nomination belongs to HBO with A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness.
Bob Mauro, President of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), the association awarding the Emmys every year, has stated: “Many say we’re in a ‘golden age’ of television, and I am totally convinced that this growth of quality is also due to the pioneering work of journalists and filmmakers who have for many years been committed, day after day, to reporting real stories from different points of view, telling the audience the truth of the world”.
