According to Ampere Analysis, AVoD services’ investment in originals and exclusives is key to growth.
Exclusivity is essential to differentiate services in a growing market, engaging consumers looking for cheaper content
As the Ampere Analysis report indicated, major advertising-funded AVoD (Ad-supported Video on Demand) platforms have joined the race for original content. In fact, groups like Roku, Tubi and IMDb TV have released over 100 brand new original titles in the last two years. One example is Tubi, which launched 20 original titles and saw monthly usage grow 164%, according to Ampere estimates between Q3 2020 and Q3 2021.
The growing investment in original content mirrors the moves of subscription streamers, allowing providers to add exclusive content to their catalogs in an environment where major studios are bringing content in house for their SVoD services.
While AVoD platforms cannot equal SVoD (Subscription Video on Demand) services, due to the disparities of a different business model and reduced investment volume, for the latter the presence of original content in the catalog remains a decisive factor in an increasingly competitive market.
