The 93rd Academy Awards took place last night. Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland”, which won the Golden Lion at the 77th Venice International Film Festival, triumphed with three Oscars (Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress in a Leading Role). Chloé Zhao is the second woman – after Kathryn Bigelow – to win an Oscar for directing (and the first Asian).
The ceremony was all about inclusion, diversity and anti-Covid protocols, with the nominees gathered not in the usual Kodak Theatre setting, but in Los Angeles’ historic Union Station. The director of the live broadcast, Steven Soderbergh, together with the authors, chose a very narrative formula, “that would resemble a film”, said Soderbergh himself. As last year, the choice was made not to rely on a single presenter but on several “hosts” to introduce the award winners, including Halle Berry, Bong Joon-ho, Bryan Cranston, Laura Dern, Harrison Ford, Regina King, Rita Moreno, Joaquin Phoenix, Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon, Renée Zellweger and Zendaya.
Best Actor Anthony Hopkins for “The Father” and Frances McDormand for “Nomadland”, who won her third Oscar. Best supporting actors Daniel Kaluuya for “Judas And The Black Messiah” and Yuh-Jung Youn for “Minari”.
Best International Film “Another Round” by Thomas Vinterberg. Best animated film “Soul” by Pete Docter (Disney/Pixar). The Oscar for best documentary went to “My Octopus Teacher” by Pippa Ehrlich, James Reed and Craig Foster (Netflix).
The company winning the most awards is Netflix with 7 awards (out of 36 nominations). It was followed by Disney with 5 awards (3 for Nomadland by Searchlight Pictures and 2 for Soul by Pixar), Warner Bros. with 3 and Amazon Studios with 2 awards.
All the winners of the 93rd edition of the Oscars follow.
