The much-needed approach of more respect, diversity, and transparency in the wake of the #MeToo movement contributed to the rise and blooming of a new professional category on film and tv sets: the intimacy coordinator. Not only do they choreograph simulated sex scenes on screen, but they also advocate for actors’ rights to feel safe and comfortable with scenes involving nudity or sexual content, while keeping up with the vision of writers and directors. A constant negotiation involving transparency, communication, and consent aimed at establishing a clear set of best practices and standardized codes of conduct. Part of their work is also contributing to dismantling stereotypes in the representation of sexuality on screen, by displaying intimate content, love, and sex as they are actually shown across different cultures. Join us in this conversation with Ita O’Brien (Intimacy coordinator on Sex Education, Normal People, I May Destroy You), who’s been pioneering this field since 2014, to discover all you need to know about intimacy coordinators.
