The success of the streaming market in the Orient continues. Over 5 billion views were registered for the new Chinese historical drama.
Story of Yanxi Palace, the new TV series produced and distributed by iQiyi, Netflix’s local clone, will beat the records of previous Oriental historical cult fiction. Since July 19, 2018, TV series’ debut day, the total number of views has amounted to 5.6 billion and the viewers‘ one to 530 million. These numbers will grow with the release of the season finale, scheduled for 28th August.
Story of Yanxi Palace has also been acclaimed by the public. Douban, the well-known Chinese review platform, has so far attributed 7.1 stars to the fiction, thus surpassing the Oriental historical dramas that preceded it – Legend of Miyue (5.4) and Empresses in the palace (6.9).
The success of Story of Yanxi Palace, currently distributed in 70 countries, shows how the overcoming of generalist television that Netflix and other giants of streaming platforms are bringing to the West, represents already a reality in China.
