The Vice of Hope, by Edoardo De Angelis, is among the five Italian films participating in the selection for the category of Best Foreign Film of the 92nd edition of the Oscars. The film was presented at the Co-production Market and Pitching Forum of MIA 2017.
Set in Castelvolturno, in the Campania region, The Vice of Hope tells the story of Maria, daughter of an alienated mother who is a boat driver over the Volturno river with Nigerian prostitutes who rent their wombs. The cast is formed by Pina Turco in the lead role, Marina Confalone, Massimiliano Rossi, Cristina Donadio and Marcello Romolo. The film is produced by Tramp Limited and O’Groove, in collaboration with Medusa Film, and with the support of the Campania Region and the Campania Region Film Commission, the film is distributed in Italy by Medusa.
Martin Eden by Pietro Marcello, Piranhas by Claudio Giovannesi, The First King by Matteo Rovere and The Traitor by Marco Bellocchio have also proposed themselves as candidates.
The Italian film to be sent to the Academy will be selected by an Anica commission (Associazione Nazionale Industrie Cinematografiche Audiovisive Multimediali) on the next September 24, 2019. The announcement of the nomination is set for January 13 2020, while the ceremony of the Oscars will take place in Los Angeles on February 9, 2020.
