The New York Times has teamed up with FX and Hulu on a new documentary series called “The Weekly”.
The American cable channel announced on Wednesday their distribution deals of a new weekly documentary series narrating stories that appear in The Times and the journalists who report them. With this new TV broadcasting license issued by FX, the channel makes its “first entry in the ongoing weekly news genre”.
The show’s name has been taken after the Time’s popular podcast “The Daily”, which started last year and brings a different story every day from the Time’s newsroom. With this new move into TV, The Times is seeking to reach the same level of success achieved in audio.
According to Sam Dolnick, the assistant managing editor in charge of The Times’ new digital initiatives, their hope is that the series “becomes a showcase for the most ambitious visual journalism of The Times”.
With an initial 30-week commitment by FX, “The Weekly” is expected to debut later this year and the episodes will be released every Sunday night in a 30-minutes format.
