Surprise during the closing ceremony of the Venice Film Festival: the Orizzonti Award for Best Screenplay was given to “The Predators” by Pietro Castellitto, produced by Fandango and Rai Cinema with the support of MiBACT and Lazio Region, that was presented at MIA 2019 during What’s Next Italy 2019.
The jury, chaired by the Australian actress Cate Blanchett, in addition to this award awarded the classics twelwe prizes: the Golden Lion for Best Movie to “Nomadland” by Clohé Zhao, produced by Cor Codium Productions, Hear/Sat Productions and Higwayman Films.
The Coppa Volpi for Best Actor was awarded to Pierfrancesco Favino for “Padrenostro” by Claudio Noce, produced by Lungta Film, PKO Cinema & Co., Tendercapital Productions, Vision Distribution and Sky Italia with the support of the Calabria Film Commission and the Calabria Region, while the one for Best Actress was awarded to Vanessa Kirby for “Pieces of a Woman” by Kornél Mundruczó, produced by BRON Studios, Creative Wealth Media Finance and Little Lamb.
The Venice Film Festival was the first film festival to take place in attendance after the Covid-19 pandemic and its international lockdown, and despite the difficulties and limitations related to security measures the sign was clearly positive. This result bodes well for Berlin and Cannes: Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian, co-directors of the Berlin International Film Festival, emphasized that Venice is a possible example for future festivals.
